Through the collaboration agreement signed today by Lorea Uribarri, director of Basque Know How Foundation, and Leire Barañano, general director of NEIKER-Tecnalia, the technology center, with its knowledge, means, and specialized personnel, is committed to contributing to the tasks of analysis and implementation of the Basque model of sustainable human development that the “Basque Know How Foundation” works on.
NEIKER-Tecnalia aims to contribute to innovation and technology transfer projects, share good practices with the BKHF and collaborate in the areas of production and plant health, as well as the specialized areas of NEIKER and R&D+i projects of interest for the introduction of innovation in the wine sector of Euskadi. For its part, Basque Know How Foundation will support the promotion of the varieties of NEIKER-Tecnalia, will give visibility to the projects undertaken by both entities, and will make areas for experimentation available to the technological cultivation center.
The collaborative project has its origins four years ago when the prestigious chef Eneko Atxa – whose Azurmendi restaurant has three Michelin stars – and his team contacted this technological center in search of tools to improve farming systems. As a result, they designed a research space that represented the work of local producers where new cultivation techniques were incorporated. NEIKER has also provided a sample of its germplasm bank, or seed bank, which is on exhibit at Azurmendi. They have carried out consultancy work in tasks of selection and gardening rotation provide seeds from varieties developed by the technological center, such as potato, tomato, pepper, etc.
This agreement will reinforce the value chain that contributes to the model of sustainable development that both entities defend.
